How this number was calculated

$30.00 × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $62,400.00 a year.

Biweekly = annual ÷ 26. Semi-monthly = annual ÷ 24. Monthly = annual ÷ 12. Daily = weekly ÷ workdays. Values keep full precision and are rounded to the cent only for display.

How to convert hourly pay to a yearly salary

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you're paid each week, then by the number of weeks you're paid in a year. Everything else — monthly, biweekly, daily — is that annual figure divided up.

Formula

Hourly rate × paid hours per week × paid weeks per year = annual gross pay

Example: $30 × 40 × 52 = $62,400.00. A full-time year of 40 hours × 52 weeks is 2,080 paid hours.

The quick mental-math shortcut (and how far off it is)

A common shortcut is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $25 an hour becomes "about $50,000". That treats a year as 2,000 hours instead of 2,080, so it understates full-time pay by 4%. The exact figure for $25 at 40 hours and 52 weeks is $52,000.00.

Going the other way, dividing a salary by 2,000 overstates the hourly equivalent by the same 4%. Use the salary to hourly calculator for the exact figure.

Biweekly vs semi-monthly: why the paychecks differ

Biweekly pay arrives every two weeks — 26 paychecks in most years. Semi-monthly pay arrives twice a month — 24 paychecks. The same annual pay therefore gives a smaller biweekly paycheck than a semi-monthly one, but two "extra" biweekly paychecks a year.

Same annual pay, different schedules ($62,400.00 a year)
SchedulePaychecks per yearGross per paycheck
Weekly52$1,200.00
Biweekly26$2,400.00
Semi-monthly24$2,600.00
Monthly12$5,200.00

If you budget monthly on biweekly pay, two months a year contain three paychecks. A safe habit is to build the monthly budget on two paychecks and treat the third as savings or a buffer.

Depending on the calendar and the employer's payroll dates, some years contain 27 biweekly or 53 weekly pay dates. This calculator uses the standard counts.

Unpaid time off and "paid weeks"

Many hourly jobs don't pay for vacation or holidays. If you expect two unpaid weeks, enter 50 paid weeks. At $25 an hour and 40 hours, that's $50,000.00 instead of $52,000.00 — a difference of $2,000.00. If your time off is paid, keep 52.

What the number leaves out

  • Overtime. Hours over 40 in a workweek are often paid at a premium — use the overtime calculator.
  • Taxes and deductions. This is gross pay. Federal and state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, health premiums and retirement contributions come out of each paycheck.
  • Benefits. Employer health coverage, retirement matches and paid leave have real value that a wage alone doesn't show.
  • Variable hours. If your hours change week to week, use an honest average — or run the calculator for a low week and a high week.

Questions people ask

How many working hours are in a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080. That's the figure most salary-to-hourly conversions use. Calendar years have 260 to 262 weekdays, so a payroll calendar can contain slightly more or fewer working days.

Is $25 an hour good pay?

It depends on where you live, your occupation and your costs. A pay level isn't "good" or "bad" in general — compare it with your budget and with wage data for your occupation and area. Our salary data section (in development) will show official wage percentiles with their reference period.

Should I count paid holidays?

Yes. If you're paid for a holiday, that time counts toward paid hours. Only reduce weeks for time you won't be paid for.

Why does my real paycheck look smaller?

Because this calculator shows pay before taxes and deductions. The difference between gross and take-home pay can be large and depends on your situation.
