How this was calculated
Your state's 2026 brackets, standard deduction, exemptions and personal and dependent credits come from the same state engine as our paycheck calculators, applied to your whole year's income: wages after the pre-tax deductions your state allows (Pennsylvania taxes 401(k) contributions and New Jersey taxes pre-tax health premiums, for example), plus self-employment profit, interest, dividends and capital gains. Self-employment profit is reduced by the federal deduction for half of self-employment tax in states that start from federal income; Pennsylvania and New Jersey allow none, Massachusetts deducts the full tax up to $2,000, and Ohio deducts the first $250,000 of business income and taxes the rest at 3%. U.S. Treasury interest is exempt everywhere (31 U.S.C. § 3124). Capital gains get each state's long-term-gains break and special rates (table below), Maryland's 2% surtax, Minnesota's 1% surtax over $1 million of investment income and Washington's capital gains tax. Alabama, Oregon and Missouri let you deduct part or all of your federal income tax, estimated here from your income with the 2026 federal rules.
Local tax uses the built-in rates for New York City, Yonkers, Maryland and Indiana counties and the Portland area, on state taxable income; a rate you enter for other places is applied to wages and self-employment profit (Michigan cities: all income; Iowa school districts: a percentage of Iowa tax). Retirement income and Social Security follow each state's 2026 rules (2025 where 2026 isn't published): exclusions, age limits, caps, income limits and credits, applied per person; on a joint return pensions are split as you choose and Social Security evenly. Extra standard deductions, exemptions and credits for age 65+ and blindness are added in the states that have them (itemizers keep the larger of their itemized deductions and the standard deduction with the extra) (and the federal senior deduction in states that pass it through: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana and North Dakota). Not included: capital losses, state payroll programs (disability, paid leave), out-of-state municipal bond interest, and state credits other than personal and dependent ones. Where a state hasn't published 2026 figures, its 2025 figures are used.
